Program Requirements


Basic proficiency in computer skills and internet use is recommended. Students must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds, be licensed to drive, and be insurable by the Chicago Horticultural Society. Before the program starts, a copy certifying current vaccinations for Hepatitis B, tetnus, pertussis, whooping cough and diphtheria as well as a negative TB test administered within 2 months of program initiation must be submitted to the school.  Students are responsible for understanding and practicing Universal Body Precautions.

STUDENT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Care for Enabling Garden horticultural displays, including planting, watering, weeding, deadheading, harvest and use.
  2. Support day-to-day general maintenance and cleanliness of the garden, including brick pavement.
  3. Support visitor programs and therapeutic sessions with client groups delivered in the Garden and at contractual sites within 30 miles of the Garden.
  4. Work with Enabling Garden volunteers caring for horticultural displays and participate as docent in interpretive programs, with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
  5. Maintain daily journal of information about plant care and performance.
  6. Become familiar with supplies, plants, materials, and equipment used in HTS therapeutic activities both on-site and off-site.
  7. Support off-site contract services at regional healthcare agencies, gradually assuming program delivery responsibilities with program participants.
  8. Complete assignments required by the certificate and professional registration program of the AHTA within timelines provided.
  9. Maintain organized storage space in Enabling Garden and Horticulture Building.
  10. Maintain photo journal of season’s activities and special events.
